Originally established in the early 1900’s by our Grandparents, the Farm was renowned for being a thriving Poultry and Game Business, supplying the gentry and dignitaries alike, with an excellent reputation for a high class product and being reliable.
Today, Haven Farm is no longer a Poultry Production unit but a friendly, family smallholding, set in a quiet hamlet of West Yorkshire, with 30 acres of clover filled pasture land and 6 acres of undisturbed woodland.
The woodland is home, not only to several hares and rabbits, but essentially to our Rare Breed Free Range Pigs - Delilah and Matilda. Delilah and Matilda are two Oxford Sandy and Black Gilts who spend their days, roaming freely at their leisure through the unturned soil and trees, wallowing in several mud baths in the warmer weather and snuggling into their warm straw filled pig arcs at night time and in the colder weather. The Haven Farm woodland has never been treated with any pesticides or chemicals, hence, is as natural as nature intended. The end result being the finest quality Free range Pork, with the most succulent and tasty carcass.
The pastureland at Haven Farm, is home to the HARECROFT flock of Free Range pedigree LLeyn sheep and lambs. Again, this breed is our chosen breed, due to its natural abilities to cope with the inclement weather conditions, its superb mothering abilities and the LLeyn’s ability to produce excellent lambs with a good meat to bone ratio. As our fields are filled with lush grass and clover the sheep take all of the essential nutrients needed, in order to produce excellent Free Range lamb, with their diet being supplemented by natural molasses coming up to the lambing season.
Although our Free Range Pork and Lamb, are not organic, they are reared on land that has not been treated with harmful chemicals and are fed on the grass from the land, grubs and roots foraged from the woodland, natural molasses and a staple diet of feed that is made from only natural products, free from any growth promoters, artificial colorants or additives, allowing the animals to grow at their own natural speed in order to produce the most tender, most natural, Free Range meat.
In order for us to gain Organic status, we would have to be members of the Soil Association, be soil tested on regular occasions and be subject to their regulations. It would also mean that we wouldn’t be able to treat the animals with routine medicines, such as wormers – which in turn promote a happy healthy animal. To farm purely organic would also mean the cost of farming free range pork and lamb, would rise dramatically for us and in turn would make the final meat products much more expensive.
We strongly believe that, as all of our animals are raised on natural chemical free products and are allowed to be free range, we are rearing a happy healthy animal, which will in turn produce for us, a superior product with a superior flavour and texture.
